SmokefreeMIL

SmokefreeMIL is a mobile text messaging service for Service members who are trying to quit smoking.

The program provides 24/7 encouragement, advice and tips to help smokers quit and stay quit. It is a six- to eight-week program, depending on when you set your quit date. Users will receive one to five messages per day and can receive other quit support by texting one of SmokefreeMIL’s keywords.

How to Sign up for SmokefreeMIL

To get tips and advice 24/7, sign up for SmokefreeMIL by texting MIL to 47848. Answer a few questions, such as your age, gender, zip code (for timing of the messages), smoking frequency and your quit date.

Once you get going with the program, along with receiving daily encouragement, you can also text certain words to 47848 to get support. The keywords are:

  • Text “NicFit” when you have a craving and need encouragement to not pick up a cigarette.
  • Text “Tense” if you need a positive message sent your way.
  • Text “Lapse” if you smoked a cigarette and need some extra encouragement to get back on track.

What information will I have to provide to sign up for SmokefreeMIL?

SmokefreeMIL collects your mobile phone number, age, gender, zip code (for timing of the messages), how often you smoke and your quit date. This information is used to enroll you into the messaging service and to personalize your experience. No information is used for any commercial purposes.

Is there a cost to sign up?

Message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile phone plan. If you have unlimited texts, there are no fees for this service. Check with your mobile carrier before signing up if you have additional questions.

Will you ever identify me by my mobile number?

SmokefreeMIL will only use your mobile number to send and receive the text messages you’ve signed up for. Your mobile number will not be linked to personal information like your name, physical address or email address.

Will SmokefreeMIL ever call me?

SmokefreeMIL will never call you. Your mobile number is only used for the text messaging program. Any information you provide will be kept confidential. No one else can or will contact you.

What if I change my mobile number?

If you change your mobile number between the time you sign up for the program and before the program ends, you will need to sign up again using your new number.

What if I want to start over and pick a new quit date?

No problem, you will have two options for starting over. Every week the program will ask you if you’ve smoked in the last seven days. If you reply YES, you will be given the option to restart the program. You can also “Opt Out” of the program at any time by texting STOP to your program and then sign up again.

How do I “Opt Out” of SmokefreeMIL?

To cancel the text messages, just reply STOP to one of the messages or text STOP at any time to 47848.

In order for your STOP text message to work, do not include any additional spaces, punctuation marks or characters of any kind.
